Territory: 1220.2 km², of which 32 km² are towns and settlements, 22 km² – industrial enterprises and roads, 614 km² – agricultural lands, 273 km² – forests, and 68 km² – tracts of other designation. There is one urban subdistrict and 8 rural ones. Population: 67,393 inhabitants, of whom 46,223 live in towns and 21,170 – in villages. Mažeikiai region is in northwest Lithuania, on the Venta river. The territory is a periphery of two Baltic nations – Lithuanians and Latvians. In the north Mažeikiai region borders on the Republic of Latvia, in the east – on Akmenė region, in the southeast – on Telšiai region, in the uthwest – on Plungė region, and in the west – on Skuodas region. The territory of the region stretches from west to east for 43.5 km, while from north to south – for 38 km. The utmost end in the west is Petraičiai village, in the east – Kalniškiai and Pakliaupė villages. The northernmost village is Gyniočiai, while the southernmost one is Pasruojė. Mažeikiai region is one of the most populous administrative regions, where the density of population is 59 people per 1 km2 (57 – in Lithuania). The region is crossed by important railway lines: Liepaja (Republic of Latvia)–Šiauliai–Kaunas–Vilnius and Riga (Republic of Latvia) – Mažeikiai – Klaipėda. Klaipėda harbour is only 110 km off, while Riga harbour and airport are 150 km off. NATURE
Relief. Mažeikiai region is located in three geographical regions. Its larger part – the central, the northern, the eastern, and the south-eastern ones stretch in a plain of the lowland of the Venta midstream. The western and the north-western parts are in the periphery of Vakarų Kuršo highland. The southern and the south-western parts are in the periphery of Rytų Žemaičių plateau. The highest point of the region’s surface is 146.9 m above sea level (around 1 km southward of Dagiai settlement). The landscape of the region is characterised by plains, forests, and an intricate network of rivers and channels. In some places the surface of plains is also hilly, especially in the eastern part of the region. The height of the hills varies from 5 to 30 metres. The relief of Laižuva environs is flat, without any rivers; only the Vadakstis river marks the border with the Republic of Latvia. Mažeikiai and Leckava environs also have a flat relief, where the Venta river and its deep affluents flow. The relief of Seda environs is rather hilly. There is a plenty of streams – affluents of the Varduva and Luoba rivers, lakes Plinkšiai and Seda. The relief is flat in the north of Židikai environs. Hills start near Židikai subdistrict, and the further to the south, the more they vary. Soils formed out of rocks, which were left by glacier or by its melting waters. The region counts a number of marshy places. In total there are 133 turbaries of different size, the total area of which is even 3,074 ha. The fertility rate of agricultural landed property is 38.30. Thus, soils are fertile and are good for growing different cultivated plants.
Water bodies of this region formed during the time of drainage of preglacial basin from the Samogitian great scoops. Rivers furrow the entire territory of the region, flowing northwest. All the water bodies of the region belong to the Venta basin. 16 rivers, the total length of which is 372 km, flow in the region’s territory. The larger rivers are: Venta, Varduva, Šerkšnė, and Vadakstis. The longest one is Varduva, which winds in the region for 74.1 km. Even 27 backwaters add variety to the landscape and enrich nature. Their total area is 440.5 ha. Some backwaters, which are on the Varduva, Šerkšnė, Vadakstis, and Ašva rivers, are rather big and modern hydrotechnical structures. Next to them, there were built small hydroelectric power stations (in Renavas, in Juodeikiai, in Šerkšnėnai, and in Kulšėnai). The region contains 4 lakes, the total area of which is hardly 432 ha. The largest and the most valuable from the natural point of view is Plinkšių lake (393.5 ha). Shallow Sedos lake (33.1 ha) popples near Seda settlement. The lake is oblong, length – 2.1 km, and the largest width is only 0.2 km. edžialenkės lake (4.3 ha, depth is 3-5 m) borders on Akmenė region (2.3 ha of the lake belong to this region). Forests. Forest coverage of the region is 27.1 percent, and it is smaller than the Lithuanian average. The biggest forests are: the Seda forest (2,744 ha), the Balėnai forest (1,210 ha) and the Mažeikiai forest (1,179 ha). The majority of woodlands is in the triangle of Seda–Žemalė–Balėnai. The forest fund covers 42,722 ha. The domination is seen by fir-groves (8,043 ha), pinewoods (7,273 ha), and birch-groves (6,015 ha).
